Got Bedtime Troubles?

Bedtime can be a difficult time for both parents and children. Children who are usually calm and well behaved can become wild tantrum throwers at the mere mention that bedtime is approaching. There are many things parents can do to make bedtime an effortless and enjoyable event.

First things first, consider what you are feeding your child for dinner. Sugar too close to bedtime can hinder your child ability to fall asleep and will make them more resistant to going to sleep because they are hyped up on sugar and ready to play.

Children love routine!!! They may resist routine at first, however, the more consistent you are with a bedtime routine, the more your child will begin to know what to expect. Make sure your bedtime routine incorporates activities that help to wind your child down. You may give them a bath, then PJ's and brushing teeth, and wind it down by spending 10-20 minutes reading to their child before bedtime. Tuck your child in, give them kisses and love, and then lights out.

Remember that you are in charge. Once you say, "lights out!" your child should know that you mean it. DO NOT put your child to bed and then let them come to the living room to hang out with you or read one more story or get some milk or anything else that delays bedtime, doing this will only make it more challenging to establish a bedtime routine. If your child gets out of bed, calmly escort your child directly back to bed without turning on a light and leave the room. Talk as little as possible. You may need to do this several times at first. Don't give up. Once your child knows that under no circumstances will they be allowed to stay up later, they will stop resisting bed time.

Good Luck Parents. I know you can do it.
